Description
These Homemade Onion Rolls are a delightful treat featuring a soft, fluffy texture and rich onion flavor. Perfect for quick dinners, these rolls are easy to make with simple ingredients like butter, onions, and flour.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ cup instant potato flakes
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2½ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 large egg white
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- Melt the unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat and add the chopped onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and browned. Set aside.
- In a bread machine pan, add the lukewarm water, softened butter, salt, sugar, potato flakes, flour, yeast, and the cooked onions in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select the dough cycle and start the machine.
- Once the cycle is complete, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead gently 6-8 times.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and gently flatten into 4-inch circles. If the dough shrinks, allow it to rest for a few minutes before reshaping.
- Place the rounds on a baking sheet. Cover loosely and let them rise in a draft-free area for 40-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and water. Brush this mixture over the rolls.
- Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
For softer rolls, try adding a bit more butter to the dough.
If you don’t have a bread machine, you can knead the dough by hand and let it rise in a warm spot.
These rolls are best when served fresh but can be frozen for later use.
