Description

This Overnight French Toast Casserole combines irresistible flavor and effortless preparation, making it a perfect choice for a delightful breakfast or brunch treat. Made with fluffy country bread, rich half & half, and a hint of cinnamon, this dish is sure to impress family and friends with its comforting taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounce loaf country bread or a fluffy french loaf (using day-old bread is best)
  • 3 ½ cups half & half
  • 8 large eggs
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar packed (+1 tb for top)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Butter the inside of a 9 x 13 inch baking dish and set aside.
  3. Cut the bread into large 1-1 ½ inch chunks and place them in the baking dish, spreading them out evenly.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine half & half, eggs, light brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Whisk until fully combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread chunks, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  6. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight.
  7. Remove the plastic wrap from the dish and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is slightly puffed. Check with a knife for doneness; bake for an additional 5 minutes if necessary.
  8. Cut into 12 large pieces and serve warm.

Notes

Using day-old bread enhances the texture and flavor of the casserole.
For added sweetness, sprinkle extra brown sugar on top before baking.
Experiment with toppings like fresh fruit or maple syrup for extra flavor.
